Fourteen.
That's how many years we've been married as of today.
FOURTEEN!!!!
Sounds like a long time, doesn't it? I know it may sound like it, but I can assure you it doesn't feel like it. And I think that's how it's supposed to be, really. When you find your mate, your heart's true match...time passes effortlessly. Life is fun...and full of joy.
That's not to say, of course, that our relationship has been without it's rough patches. But in the end, we have a deep love and respect for each other that outweighs any hurdles we may encounter. We are pledged to one another to be here, be present, and be that comfort in the eye of the storm. We take each other for what we are, not what we want the other to be.
Barry is my anchor...my realist... my practical, economically intelligent, resourceful, sweet, strong, deep-thinking, playful, never aggressive or jealous, perfect match. He has the longest fuse in the history of time, doesn't worry (EVER!), and never gets really angry with me, though I give him many reasons to.
I am the yin to his yang. I am the dreamer who doesn't like to get caught up in the details of how said dreams happen...I just want them to! I want to find all of the fun little things to do and enjoy in life, and not worry about all of the work. I get frustrated when I am cornered or feel like I can't do the things I want to do. I have a lightning quick temper, but cool off quickly because life is too short to be mad. I worry that I can't balance everything...being a good mother, a good wife, a good therapist, a good friend...in general, a good caretaker. I don't always have good boundaries, because I like for the people around me to be happy.
But at the end of this day, our 14th anniversary, all I can tell you is that I think we both got pretty lucky and I am so very thankful to have found such a wonderful man to spend my life with. If you can look back every year of your marriage and think, "I love my life!", then you are exactly where you need to be.
I do, and I am.
But just so you know, I'm the one who got really, REALLY lucky... :)
