Superheros

The other day, I was in my bathroom getting ready - ever notice how a lot of my stories start out that way? You'd think I spend all my time in there...but it reality, those little monkeys follow me everywhere...I never get a moment's peace! - Anyway...Kendall walks in and tells me she needs to tell me something REALLY important. Of course, I can't wait to hear what it is! But then I have to smile when she tells me, because...well, it's so...so..."Kendall". Witness:

"Mama, I need to tell you something REALLY important!"

"OK, shoot."

"I was thinking and guess what? I'm going to be a superhero! My name is NatureGirl 'cause I protect nature and Scout is going to be my trusty sidekick! His name is WonderDog and his super power is that his bark is so loud it can be heard around the world so he can warn the entire earth of imminent danger!!!"

"Like what? Maybe a huge asteroid coming straight at the earth? A flood? An earthquake? What will he warn everyone of?"

She scrunches up her nose at me, and replies "MAMA! Nothing silly like that! I'm talkin' more like a giant grasshopper invasion! Remember??? I'm NATURE Girl!!!

First Day of Second Grade

Today is the first day of school for my Kendall-bug. I am the mother of a second-grader...I can hardly believe that! We spent yesterday cleaning her room, setting out clothes for the week, and getting all of her school stuff organized. Of course, I told her she could have anything she wanted for breakfast on her first day, and do you know what she requested???? CEREAL!!! Umm, I don't think so! We don't do cereal on weekdays during the school year...we have a big hearty breakfast to fuel the brain. So, after thinking about it for a minute, she requested homemade waffles and fruit. I one-upped her and suggested a fruit smoothie with strawberry protein powder as well...and that sure got a smile out of her!

After I got up to get Noah ready to leave with Barry at 6:30, I had the kitchen to myself and decided not to waste any time. The waffles smelled sooooo good! In fact, I think Kendall smelled them and got up a little early! We sat and chatted a bit, fussed over her hair, and she wrote a nice note to her new teacher. Then, before I knew it, it was time to go! But not before Mom got a nice picture on the front porch...Wow...another year has come and gone. First grade flew by, and I'm sure second will too. I could really use another month with her home...there's so much for us to do together! And I really enjoy being with her. BUT, she misses her friends and the structure of school. She was so excited that last night at School Year's Eve, she didn't want to go home!

She is so much like I was, sometimes it's scary!

Blogger Buddies!

While in South Carolina, I had the wonderful opportunity to meet up with Kiki, Kenady and Claire! I was VERY excited! We planned on meeting for lunch on Thursday, since it was Kiki and Kenady's day off...and Claire could meet us on her lunch hour. That worked out great for me too, since I was ready for a break from the beach...too much sun for my fair skin and all that! I still can't believe that Kenady made the 2 hour drive, but I sure am glad, because we had a blast! We had such lively conversation at lunch, and it felt like we had known each other for a long time! These gals are a lot of fun!

We had a super yummy lunch, did a little shopping, and then visited Kiki's store, where the girls quickly escorted me to a fitting room and made it their mission to find me a pair of jeans that fit well. If you read my blog often, you know how I HATE shopping for jeans. Oh, I sure like wearing them! They are my favorite thing to wear! But man, it can sure do a number on your self-confidence when you can't find jeans that fit!! Anywho...

Kik and Kenady are the jeans experts!! We found a pair and I bought them immediately! So if you are ever in the Myrtle Beach area, pop on into The Gap and let them help you out!

Kik, Claire, and Kenady, thank you so much for such a fun day! You were everything I thought you'd be...and more! I can't wait for my next trip to the beach so we can get together again...unless you make it to Ohio first! LOL!

Kenady, fulfilling my dare to eat that entire HUGE peanut butter cup! She did it folks! I was totally impressed!

We girls, in front of Kiki's store...

An Early Anniversary Gift

Ooooooo, look what my hubby got me for an anniversary gift...Isn't she pretty???? I am SO EXCITED!!!! But it's killing me that I don't have time right now to read the manual (yes, I'm anal like that) and play! That's ok, the beach is near...and then I will have plenty of time, right? Isn't my sweet Barry the best??

Yes, it's early, our anniversary is Sept. 2, but he wanted me to have it before the beach! OMG, I am going to have so much fun playing with my new toy!!!!! I'll bet you'll be excited to see my pics when I get back, won't you???

Have a great weekend, peeps!!

Hang In There!

Ok, I'm sure someone out there is wondering where I've been.

I haven't had time to post, or even to comment on my favorite blogs...but I AM reading them when I can get a free minute! Life has just exploded around here this week, and it doesn't look like it's going to slow down anytime soon...especially as we are getting ready for vacation. So, do not fear, my faithful readers...I have pictures that need posted and stories to tell...unfortunately I just don't have the time right now. I'll try to find a few minutes soon...I promise! And if not, take heart! I will be taking my laptop with me on vacation and should definitely be able to post some new updates then!!!

Hang in there with me!

Coolin' Off

Today it was super hot and the sun was intense! The kiddos were getting terribly rowdy in the house, and I needed to get out in the garden to pick beans, so I suggested they play in the blow-up pool. Well, I didn't need to ask them twice, that's for sure! They were suited up in no time and headed out for lots of sliding, swimming and splashing...

After they'd been out there for over an hour or so, I made them come in for a little break to have a snack and watch a movie while I took a shower. I always make sure the kids are sitting in the great room when I take a shower. I need to know where those little boogers are...well, really just the youngest little booger. After the movie, Kendall wanted to count her money. She has been saving up for a Nintendo DS. We won't buy it for her, but we told her she could start doing chores and earn an allowance to start saving for it. She is also allowed to put half of her money from making the honor roll, or birthday money, or money from her grandparents in there. You can never learn fiscal responsibility too early! Well, she is up to $70 in cash! Then she wanted to take all of her change to the bank, but I told her she had to count it and roll it first. Can kids ever get enough practice counting money? When she was all done sorting and counting and rolling, she had another $16.50! Boy, is she thrilled! I keep telling her how good it will feel to go to the store and buy her DS with money she earned ALL BY HERSELF. Plus, it's a good lesson. Let's just hope that this will spur her to keep up with her chores, as I'm about to add a few more to her list! And if all goes well, Noah will be begging for chores soon!

Not much to report, but here's a recipe!

Although we've had a busy weekend around here, there's really been nothing worth mentioning! And I've taken NO pictures...can you believe that?

Kendall spent the weekend with my mom, and I can tell you that she had the time of her life! They went school shopping, she went swimming with the neighbor kids, they went to the county fair, and visited with some family friends. She was S.P.O.I.L.E.D. rotten and exhausted when she got home! But Grandma said she was as good as gold, so I am a happy mama!

With Kendall gone, we spent some good quality time with Noah. After I got home from working on Saturday, we took him shopping, since our portable DVD player has been acting up. Lord knows we don't want to be without one on our trip to the beach! That could make for a VERY long drive! Then we took him to Chick-Fil-A for a kid's meal and we all shared a milkshake...YUM!! When we got home, the neighbors called and told us to come over, so we did, and then kids played...Noah was worn out by the time we got him home and ready for bed.

On Sunday, we got up, made a big breakfast and then decided to go on a bike ride before it got too hot. Yeah, right. It was already hot! But we persevered! Then we hung out around here, doing some work. Barry filled up the blow-up pool and we set it up on the deck since it's supposed to be hot all week...the kiddos should get some good use out of it! Shawn is off traveling again, so we invited Deetra and Shea over for dinner...BLT's with fresh tomatoes from my garden, creamy cucumbers (from my garden) and onions, and zucchini brownies (from guess where???) The brownies turned out so good, I am going to post the recipe, which I got out of Barry's hometown "church ladies'" cookbook, which I LOVE! Be forewarned, this recipe is more like a sheet cake than a brownie...but it is quite tasty, and a great way to use all that zucchini! MommyK, I'm thinkin' of you!! FYI, makes enough for a crowd!

Zucchini Brownies

4 eggs
1/2 c. oil
2 c. sugar
2 c. flour
2 tsp. soda
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. salt
4 tbsp cocoa
1 tsp vanilla
3 c. grated zucchini
1 c. nuts (optional)

Beat the first 3 ingredients for 2 minutes. Add dry ingredients. Stir in remaining 3 ingredients. Bake in a greased jelly roll pan at 350 for 25-30 mins. Cool. *** NOTE: Barry does not like nuts in his food, so I substituted a handful of Ghiradelli semi-sweet chocolate chips...it was DIVINE! I highly recommend it!***

Frosting

8. oz cream cheese, softened
3/4 c. butter, softened
3 c. powdered sugar
2 tbsp cocoa
1 tsp vanilla

Mix together and spread on cooled brownies.

While Deetra, the kids and I were enjoying our brownies, Barry headed off to meet my mom and pick up Kendall-Bug. When they got back, they each enjoyed a brownie and then it was time to get those kids into bed! I let them sleep in this morning, and we had a nice, laid-back day. I had a LOT of stuff to get done around here, so they played in the pool and watched some movies after we got back from running a few errands. Now I am in the process of making some Roasted Veggie Quesadillas for dinner, and then we are off to take Kendall to Aunt Jessie's house...another sleepover!!! Boy, is she having fun, or WHAT???? The only person I know who has a social schedule to rival Kendall's is Aunt Jessie herself!!!

Have a good evening, folks...maybe I'll have something good tomorrow!

PMS and Global Warming

I don't normally get PMS. At all. Yes, I do know how lucky I am! No cramps, no back pain, no headaches, no moodiness, no weeping, etc. The cycle just does it's thing and that's it. Well, this month, things were weird.

Wednesday I was a complete lunatic. I felt anxious and my heart felt like it was beating right out of my chest. I was angry and frustrated with everything and everyone...for no reason whatsoever. Everything I tried to do came out a complete mess. Nothing went right. And for some unknown reason, the person my ire was directed at was none other than my sweet-tempered hubby. Every time I looked at him, I scowled. If he spoke to me, I wanted to claw his eyes out. The mere thought of him made my blood boil. And why, you ask? I have no freakin' idea!!! It was like I had no control over myself...an out-of-body experience, if you will. I was looking down at myself saying things like, "What the HELL is wrong with you?", "Stop it!!!", "WHAT is your problem??", and "For Pete's sake, just go TO BED!!!" And then the crying. For no good reason. Just because the dishes in the dishwasher were dirty and I forgot to run it. Just because there were clumps of Scout hair all over the floor. Just because we didn't have any NutThins. Just because Noah peed in his pants, and laughed about it. Just because. And just for your information...I AM NOT A CRIER. AT. ALL. So this freaked even me out quite a bit!

Now, luckily for Barry, this never happens. But, also unfortunately for Barry, this never happens. See, Barry didn't grow up with women or girls in the house. He lived with his Dad and brother..and his sister lived with his mom...a state away. He didn't really date much. He has no experience whatsoever with this kind of thing. He's simply not used to it. So I guess you could say he got submarined.

And maybe... just maybe... you may deem him the luckiest man alive that he has never had to experience it. I certainly do.

Or did.

Until this past Wednesday...July 30, 2008.

So now, I'm afraid that he thinks I am having a complete breakdown. And clearly, he was wondering what on earth had happened to our happy home. To be quite honest, I was wondering too! I didn't even realize it was PMS...until one of my friends asked me. Yeah, we're all clueless about that stuff around here.

Now rest assured, as of yesterday all was well. First thing in the morning, I bounced out of bed in my usual sunny manner and first thing, called my hubby to apologize for the antics the day before. "I'm so sorry about yesterday! I don't know what was going on! But I feel much better today!! See you tonight!" (Can you imagine what must have been going through his head?)

So anyway, I know you all thought that was my story for the day. But it's really just the background info. The real story is a Kendall story. And it goes like this...

Yesterday, I was feeling so much better that I decided to take a nice, long, hot shower...complete with exfoliation, deep hair conditioning, and shaving. Because my hair is so fine, I have to get right on the hair-drying or it just dries by itself...and that is not a good thing. My hair needs either a diffuser or a round brush to make it look nice. (Oh, and WHY does it take 30 years to discover these things about yourself?) Anyway, I wrapped a towel around myself and started drying my hair, going to town with my round brush. Suffice it to say that when I was finished, I was HOT. Kendall was standing next to me, in a fresh, summery sundress, brushing her hair and applying glittery lip gloss. She informed me that she wanted to impress her new sitter. (Heehee...that might have gone out the window on Tuesday when Mia was here for the first time...and Kendall didn't have her teeth brushed, had major bedhead, and was wearing mis-matched clothes. But hey, who am I to judge? After all, I was a raving lunatic on Wednesday!)

So, of course I told her that she looked beautiful and that I was SURE Mia would be impressed. At this moment, I was positively dripping with sweat. I said, "Kendall, is it hot in here? I'm really HOT!!!"

"No, Mama. I'm not hot. I'm just fine!"

"Are you sure? Hmmm, do you think maybe I'm havin' a hot flash, or is it just hot because of the hair dryer?"

Shrugging, she replied as innocently and nonchalantly as can be, "Well, maybe it's just global warming..." and turned around and walked out of the room.

I just stood there, looking at the door, not sure what the appropriate response should be.

I'm still not sure.
